Program Overview
Literacy is an integral part of the success of not only students' academic careers but their entire future. That is why we offer students tutoring in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, note-taking, and critical thinking. AYA is able to provide students with a customized curriculum to meet every student's needs. We offer small group tutoring for cooperative learning based on Californian Common Core State Standards.
READING
Students use IXL and Khan Academy, online programs to practice reading and math skills. Our expanded day programs promote active reading techniques. Students ask questions, make connections and respond to the text. Students also make predictions about what is found in the text and use mental images to aid incomprehension. The active reader always; asks questions, makes predictions, visualizes, connects, and responds.
WRITING
Our programs provide daily time for students to write; students are given daily journal entries or might choose a topic as a group to write about. Students have the opportunity to participate in journalism club, reading club or poetry club to name a few. Every month our leaders teach academic lessons to our students that expose them to various writing genres such as expository, descriptive, persuasive and narrative.
LANGUAGE
We encourage students to engage in collaborative conversations to practice language. Students may participate in a poetry club, open mic, and visual performing arts to name a few. Student use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts. We use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading or listening.
